Ed Latimore, professional boxer and physicist-in-training, joins the Drinking Partners to ponder and muse as only a modern-day Renaissance man can. Recently signed to Roc Nation Sports, Mr. Latimore, or “Black Magic,” as he is known in the ring, remains undefeated in his professional career (13-0) and offers a rare perspective in this captivating interview. The podcast begins with Mr. Latimore’s examination of how understanding the science of movement impacts his approach to boxing. As both an intellect and a fighter, he converses with the Drinking Partners with a swift wit and a sharp style, as tales from the ring are mixed with Drinking Partners-style jesting banter. At times playful and at times introspective, the interview is a fast and furiously engaging hour.
In this live podcast from Rock Bottom Pittsburgh, the Drinking Partners welcome Rock Bottom’s brewer Meg Evans and Dave Cerminara from Apis Meadery, who share their recent collaboration, a blueberry-infused braggot, a centuries-old drink that combines mead and beer. A large and lively crowd listens in as Ed and Day attempt (and mostly fail) to keep their questions and jokes family-friendly. Soon, all bets are off as Ms. Evans, one of only a handful of female brewers, opens the taps and offers all of Rock Bottom’s selections. It’s nearly impossible to guess who enjoys this live podcast the most: the Drinking Partners, the brewers, or the guests at Rock Bottom. The highly interactive and bustling crowd chimes in often, with zingers that impress even the two comedians. Brewing since 2001, Rock Bottom Pittsburgh has come close to mastering the craft, yet remains welcoming and fun, much like its head brewer, Ms. Evans. This podcast is ninety minutes of energy, entertainment, and information, a treat for the listeners, but even moreso for those lucky enough to have been in attendance.
Lee Terbosic, known as The Pittsburgh Magician, joins a select few as he returns to chat with the Drinking Partners in this follow-up episode. Mr. Terbosic, a nationally touring comedian and magician, brings his wildly entertaining show, Bamboozled, to Dave and Busters (Pittsburgh) each Saturday night. Despite Ed’s attempts to convince Lee to reveal some illusionary secrets, the magician deftly declines, although he does suggest that Ed must first purchase both a rabbit and a hat. Shortly after, Mr. Terbosic explains to Day that he needs more than “strong ankles” to be able to master Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal movements. The interview is one of the Drinking Partner’s best, balanced with information, amusement, and, of course, some classic Drinking Partner craziness. Be sure to have this on repeat play, especially once Mr. Terbosic begins to beguile Ed and Day with mentalist tricks, leaving both comedians ready to intern with The Pittsburgh Magician.
Philadelphia-born, but Pittburgh-living rapper Nerd Boy joins the Drinking Partners in this enlightening and energetic episode. Early on, Ed speaks on Nerd Boy’s charismatic originality while informing listeners that he is the only rapper who performs in “boat shoes.” With a combination of lyrical intelligence and a dynamic stage presence, Nerd Boy proves why he is a rising star in the rap scene. The podcast moves swiftly; an early discussion on the delicate line between being a performer versus being a minstrel is of particular interest. Toward the interview’s midpoint, the trio muses on the rising importance and acceptance of education in art and culture. While Nerd Boy works on his second album, listeners can check out his first, “Philadelphia Warriors.” Much like their guest, this Drinking Partners podcast is smart and animated.
